Sip on This: The Power of Email Marketing May 17, 2023June 4, 2023 If you are anything like me, you probably have an inbox full of unopened marketing emails from brands. While, as a consumer, this may seem like a useless and annoying marketing ploy, as marketers, we know that email marketing works, and it works well! I could go on and on about successful email marketing campaigns, but we don’t have to go much further than the coffee cup on your desk to understand! Starbucks has been a prime example of email marketing strategies with excellent results! Keep reading to learn about email marketing and how you, like Starbucks, can use this strategy. Benefits of Email Marketing: Email marketing is a cost-effective and highly targeted way to promote products and services. It allows businesses to reach customers who have opted in to receive communications, forming a direct line of communication between brand and consumer. Think of remarketing, personalized communications, new products, promotions, rewarding brand loyalty, and retention of new customers. Check out this infographic with some quick email marketing stats: Starbucks Email Marketing Campaign: Starbucks leverages customer data to deliver personalized and relevant content to its customers. One of Starbucks’s most successful email campaigns is the Starbucks Rewards program. This email campaign targets its loyalty rewards program customers. This campaign promotes free drinks, exclusive offers, and personalized recommendations for their consumers. The program is highly effective in building brand loyalty, driving customer engagement, and increasing overall sales. Let’s look at one of these emails I received earlier this week: In this specific email, Starbucks is promoting a one-day event where rewards members can opt-in for double stars (their point system). Not only is Starbucks trying to entice their consumers to come in and purchase their products, but they’re also engaging with consumers through this email campaign by making customers opt into this promotion by clicking the call-to-action button. With email marketing, Starbucks can personalize their ads, which would be more difficult to do through other channels. By adding my name to the email, I personally felt more compelled to act, simply because I felt a sense of exclusivity. Notice how in the fine print, they also use “your Double Star Day.” The ability to have that level of personalization is a huge win for Starbucks. No one wants to feel like they’re part of a mass email chain (even if they are). Best Practices for Email Marketing: Building a quality email list. This involves collecting email addresses from customers who have opted to receive email communications. This ensures that the email list is comprised of engaged and interested customers. Creating compelling email content. Email content should be personalized, relevant, and engaging. Personalization can be achieved by segmenting the email list based on customer demographics and interests. Testing your email content by conducting A/B and copy tests for new campaigns is very important. This will help your business maximize ROI and better strategize future campaigns. Optimizing email campaigns for mobile devices. With the rise of technology and the use of smart devices, emails should be designed to be easily readable on small screens. If your content is not compatible with mobile, there’s a high chance your campaign will have high bounce rates, low CTR, and even lower conversions. Conclusion: While many may consider that email marketing has lost its charm, the statistics show that it is well and alive! Starbucks is a perfect example of leveraging email marketing to engage its customers and drive business growth. If your business hasn’t implemented email marketing in its marketing strategies, then make sure to follow the best practices outlined in this post to start!
